Geology

Tap a volcano apart.

The app's anatomy board is a real cross section: plume, crater, layered cone, conduit, dike, sill, chamber and host rock. Tap a number to read what each part does, and drag the magma up from the chamber to the vent.

The catalog

Thirty sleeping giants.

Search, sort and filter the same records the app ships with, from Fuji's silent cone to Shiprock's bare volcanic neck. Open any card for the story, the landscape and how its status was set.

Deep time

Ride the ribbon back.

The Archive's time ribbon runs from the Holocene to the Carboniferous. Pick an epoch to see which volcanoes in the atlas last erupted then, and which vast lava provinces belong to it.

What's inside

One atlas, five rooms.

Everything is written for curious people, not specialists, and the whole archive travels with you on the device.

Discover

A featured volcano every day, unusual places, stories in the rock, and browsing by region or by age of the last eruption.

Volcanoes

Search by country, name, type or status. Sort by height or longest quiet, switch metres to feet, and open a full record with its eruption history.

Compare bench

Put up to four volcanoes side by side and see how height, age, type and last activity stack up.

Earth Map

Pins and filters on an offline Atlas of coastlines, or on Apple's satellite imagery when you have a connection.

Geology

The interactive cross section, a cabinet of eight rocks and minerals, and twelve short articles from plate tectonics to reading ash layers.

Your archive

Favourites, notes, places you care about and your reading history, all kept on your device. Export notes as text or erase everything in one tap.

Specimen cabinet

Hold the rock in your head.

Basalt, obsidian, pumice, tuff and more, each with a short note on where to find it.

Quiet is not safe.

A dormant volcano can erupt again. SilentMantle is made for learning. It is not a hazard map or a safety notice, and its Active, Dormant and Extinct labels are working labels explained on every record.

For safety and travel decisions, follow local authorities and the national monitoring agency.
